Backup and Recovery Mechanism

A database management system uses its back up and recovery component to recovery a database from hardware or software failures

As an example, If the computer system fails in the middle of a complex update program, the DBMS makes sure to restore the database to the state it was in, before hte update program actually started getting executed. Alternatively, the DBMS could ensure that the program is resumed from the point at which it was interrupted so that its full effect is recorded in the database.
